Cottages & Small Solar Systems
BOYD SOLAR

The older style cottage systems are small 12 or 24 volt systems that run small recreational-vehicle-type appliances and lighting. Power systems are simple DC and do not involve inverters. Although not as popular as they once were, they are simple reliable and easy to put together. These systems are within the ability of a well educated do-it-your-selfer.

The next step up is a small basic inverter system that can be acquired through our catalogue. If you have done your homework, have your energy worksheet done and know what system will fit your needs and would like to order the kit or components through us we would be glad to serve you. Our prices are very good and to keep them there only limited e-mail tech support is included with kit orders. We can also design your system at extra charge.

The newer, larger cottages which demand larger systems, and cottages which need 240 volts where there is no utility power, should consider the full service route. Independence Series off-grid systems power normal household appliances and can be configured specifically for the type and duration of use you desire. These larger systems can be augmented with the owner's or builder's efforts as far as installing the solar panels on the roof. (This can impart considerable savings as this is where much of the labour for installation is incurred.) For customers outside our service area we will work with your electrician to insure a proper installation. For safety, electrical code, insurance, and warranty reasons we are not able to allow anyone not licensed as an electrician to assemble any high voltage (110V) systems.

Route to our Solar Catalogue

A note from Sean for Do-It-Yourselfers:

As president of Boyd Solar I understand people's want to try to economize. There is a  wide misconception that one simply "puts on" solar panels. However, it should be understood that a solar power or solar heating system in your home is comparable in complexity to any other large system in your home, such as heating and air conditioning including the gas plumbing. After all, it is really a small power plant.

Our full service department is by no means out dated by the convenience of buying a catalogue item, certainly these kits are configured so the parts all work together properly like our custom systems, but are smaller and simpler, and configured with economy in mind, So if you know the performance you are looking for and can match it to one of our of the shelf units like many others have, great! that is why we offer these products the way we do. Safety and good workmanship are important to long life, of the product and its owner! So we recommend the solar systems in our catalogue be installed only by persons experienced in solar or electrical installations.

If you are not as sure about the configuration or matching your usage to size, then I recommend to let us configure a system for you. Overwhelmingly customers agree that the cost of consultation was worth every cent. We have replaced, repaired and reconfigured systems built by not only the general public but by other so-called professionals. I would prefer to see you avoid this costly situation.

I hope to help you along the way to your new system,

Sean
